Vote or Die or whatever, man...

Cathy Seipp mocks the vote, or rather the idealistic bozos who believe the stupid, stoned, drunk and just plain uninformed should go to the polls this November 2nd.

Everyone should vote.

or not.. that's the right to choose.

There ought to be some middle ground between the system we have now in Minnesota, which is depressingly vulnerable to vote fraud (been an election judge, read the laws, seen the fraud and been unable to do jack about it) and the system we used to have in the 50s where people were theoretically able to vote but in practice got screwed out of their rights at the local level.

If you're going to vote you ought to be sober/clean and have put some thought into the decision, something more than "well, all my friends say X is a homophobic scumbag" or "everybody at the church says Y is a commie pinko fag", which is unfortunately where a lot of the discussion seems to have sunk to.

Choose, but be responsible. That's all I'm saying.

oh yeah, I definitely think people should at least be in their right mind when voting. I also know too many people who go to the polls and just blindly pick, or pick because it's what their parents think is right, or because it's what their girlfriend or boyfriend supports.

People should make up thier own minds and keep friendship, family, relationship, and any kind of controlled or incapacitating substances out of it.

We should be so lucky. I think one thing that is going to come out of this election, no matter who wins, is that the voter registration laws are going to get tightened up - no more offering bounties to register voters, no more vouching for people registering at the polls.

What would be really great is if they cut the campaign season back to a month or two before the primaries and then just the couple of months before the election. I think a lot of people are just sick of the whole thing at this point and want to get it over with.
