Decisions, decisions

I'm trying to make up my mind what kind of head cover (if any) I should get to help me muddle through this last winter in Minnesota. Marshall's has some furry-looking ear flap hats which look like they should be quite warm and maybe large enough to stuff my headphones under, but they're almost certainly more expensive than the Thinsulate watch caps I saw at Menard's. Of course, I could just be hardcore and wear my Nationals baseball cap. What do you think, f-list peeps?

Poll #905508 Flaps or caps?

What kind of hat should I buy?

A warm hat with ear flaps.
6(60.0%)
A watch cap of finest Thinsulate.
2(20.0%)
None, go with the baseball cap!
0(0.0%)
A fur-lined yarmulke.
1(10.0%)
A balaclava.

A tough call. Having both the lighter hat (for warmer days) and the heavier fur hat for those butt-numbing OMGit'scold days is ideal. If you wear the heavier hat when it's too warm for it, you might sweat, which can lead to chills and all kinds of bad. But the lighter hat might leave you too exposed on certain days.

When I was on the cross-country ski team in high school, we had to be careful about wearing the appropriate layers, thickness, etc, and keeping our body temperatures stable. Wind exposure is bad. Breaking into a sweat is also very bad. I'd say try to get both.

I've found that nothing quite compares to leather or fur for the really really cold days. But both are too hot much of the time.

*nods* All very true, and the fact that this will be my last winter here is also a factor - I don't want to spend more than $20 on a hat I might only be using for a couple of weeks between now and the end of Anime Detour.

I already have the baseball cap, so the real question is whether to get the hat with flaps or the watch cap.

You only have a few more months here to enjoy (this term used very loosely) Minnesota winters. Don't buy anything more than what you may occasionally need in the future.

Also, remember last winter with the -20 windchill and such? I wore this annoying little floppy hat that keeps falling off, and it worked just fine. :) This winter I'm using this generic knit hat, and it also works just fine if it would stop creeping up over my ears...

Ear creep is the thing that annoys me the most about watch caps and toques.
