More songs about demand curves and fuel

As a follow-up to this rant on the current political stupidity regarding gasoline prices, King Banaian has an extensive discussion of the political reax from both parties and a link to a discouraging Craig Westover comparison of the energy policies of Senate candidates Amy Klobuchar (DFL) and Mark Kennedy (R). Bonus: a quote from a noted European Socialist leader about wage, price and other economic controls.

Re: price?
No, you're right - we're still getting a heck of a deal over here, especially compared to the Europeans.

Yes, but then don't most European communities have decent affordable mass transporataion? What choice do we have in the US, especially if you don't live in a major metropolitan area?

Our only long distance trip this summer will be to Boston to visit our Uncle. We'd gladly take Amtrak over driving but it's such an embarassing joke. We know someone who recently took Amtrak to Boston from central NY state, a 5 1/2 hour drive -- it took 20 hours on Amtrak! No lie.

If you're in a major city, sure, but once you get out in the countryside the transit system is just as patchy as it is here in the states. That's leaving aside the deliberate political decisions by most EU nations to jack up the gasoline taxes to help keep people out of their cars and on the trains & buses.
