Orphans of the aisles

Jonathan Margolis wanders through Sainsbury's and considers a number of "orphan brands", products one would have thought long since departed from the free market such as Marmite, Brasso, and Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie.
"...as a brand, it's worth £33m a year. It's quite difficult to get brands to do the decent thing and die."

I myself have used Brasso; nothing quite like it for making one's collar brass and belt buckle (on the dress greens, naturally) shine the way they're supposed to.

Yikes!!! Those Brits eat some weird junk!!! Blancmange powder? Gravy powder? I don't even want to know what "Smash" is. Although I thoroughly agree with you on Brasso. It's a fine product but not even the Brits would attempt to ingest that.

I had some Marmite once (or was that Vegemite?) and it tasted exactly like the kind of food you'd eat on an overpopulated island surrounded by hostile submarines. Smash, now, that sounded interesting. How can you go wrong with canned mashed potatoes? Don't answer that, please...

Wombat,
I know you asked me not to answer this but with your blood sugar concerns, I'd steer claer of canned mashed potatoes. I don't know why but that reminded me of the canned rice pudding that I used to live on in college.

I did? Oh, yeah...I think I was trying to fend off possible disturbing responses from my vile and treacherous friends. No, it's nothing I'd actually try myself.
