Can't get there from here

Ah, the wonders of the Internets. Since the first of the year, I've been completely unable to reach google.com from either of my home computers, and can only reach netscape.com from Cowzilla - which is really damn strange, since both Cowzilla and Deskpro are using the same Time Warner pipe out to the world, and in fact Cowzilla has to fumble for the wireless signal off the router. It's pretty damn annoying. I already tried clearing the cache on Firefox and flushing all the temporary Internet files, but that hasn't helped any. I'd think it was something specific to Firefox, but M$FT's Internet Exploder is having the same problems. Anyone have any suggestions?

Your lmhosts file has probably been corrupted by a virus. It contains a number of 'local' addresses, or at least name translations. Some trojans replace the lmhosts to redirect anyone trying to get somewhere that might help them remove the trojan. You can open it in as a text file and see the contents.

Great, just great. So much for McAfee Virus Scan. Well, it'll keep me off the street and out of trouble tonight, that's for sure. The weird thing is that it appears to have whacked some purely random websites and not affected MSN.com at all. Is this one of the system files in the c:\\WINNT\ folder, or should I look for it in the browsers' folders?

It's under windows\system32...maybe a little deeper. It's been a while since I've had to mess with one.

Well, I guess between Hoovering out the hosts file, running the M$FT Malware Removal Tool, and power-cycling the desktop last night everything got straightened out. Thanks.
