Now I be qualified an' shit

Passed the written and the range portions of the carry permit class today. I'm fairly happy with my results at the range - except for one round that went far outside the body outline, most of the other 49 rounds hit in the 5 and 4 rings, which is not bad considering this is the first time I've fired Masha at all. She took a chunk out of my thumb, but that was me being stupid and not keeping my left thumb out of the way. You'd think I would have remembered what Carlos' Colt Commander did and changed my grip, but noooo...

Anyways, I'll clean her tomorrow. I'm expected at the AD New Year's Eve Party, or at least the external hard drive is. ~_^

Thanks. $100 and one lunch hour later, I should have my permit and be able to carry up here and in Virginia. The instructor has offered to arrange for class members to get the New Hampshire permit as well. It's all good. ^^

Which part, the part about my now being eligible for a carry permit, or the accuracy?

Probably both. I'm a bit wary of guns.

You should be glad that there are now a dozen more responsible, sane people out there who can safely handle their pistols and make the lives of criminals even more uncertain, but I can't tell you how to feel. I know that I feel safer and more confident now that I've completed the class...it's not like I'm going to strap on my pistol and act all Junior Lawman.

My views on gun control are a bit odd, I admit. I have deep respect for skill required to handle firearms. A cousin of mine is a crack-shot with a rifle, and I've always admired his abilities. However, I dislike the fact that civilians own guns. Only the police and the military should be legally allowed to possess firearms.

I know both sides of the gun control issue, and don't want to debate it. It's been hundreds of years since guns have been the only way to protect ourselves. I believe that our society is benevolent enough to let all civilians survive without bearing firearms.

We can agree to disagree on this.

The interesting thing is that the instructor warned us that if anyone went for a head shot on the target he would fail them immediately. Apparently training people to shoot for the center of mass is, while not a legal requirement, really the only safe way to go if things go sideways and you wind up in front of a grand jury trying to avoid indictment for wasting some murderous dirtbag. Which has happened.
