Thoroughly mixed

We had the ATC Board meeting last night, got a number of things decided and voted on (my election as con chairman for Anime Detour 2005, and new bylaws regarding voting membership) and also talked a lot about policy and programming and hotel issues. Looks like we'll be at the Thunderbird, not the City Center Marriott, since the security issues (think hundreds of teenage suburban girls wandering around downtown Minneapolis on a Saturday night) are more than we want to deal with. For an SF convention and its older membership it's not such a big deal, but our members are a lot younger than the average SF fan and a lot less worldly besides. Everybody was very impressed by the size of the T-bird's function space (20,000 square feet plus, a dozen other function rooms and 15 suites, YEOW) and the two pools and the proximity to the Sprawl of America, so unless that hotel blows up in our face I think we're set for April 8-10 next year.

On the other hand, the evening went downhill abruptly when I got outside, realized I'd left the lights on, and was unable to start the truck. Had it towed to Bobby & Steve's, and through various miscommunications not only didn't get it fixed that night but didn't get home until 4 AM, at which point I was too sick to go in to work today. Damn. The bus ride into town on the 556 took forever (it's only express from Diamond Lake Road to downtown, and we caught it at Old Shakopee and Nesbitt), the cost of fixing the battery, with tow, came to $300>, and yeah, on balance, it was a sucky day in spite of the nice weather.

Yeah, I can see downtown not being a great choice for that reason. I've been to a few comic conventions at the Thunderbird.

I love the T-bird as a convention hotel. I think it will suit you guys very well.

(Cajones from the other room: "I might have to go, even just to see another convention at the Thunderbird!")

He should! You should too! Heck, CONvergence is throwing a room party at AD2005, so don't you owe it to yourselves to come and frolic amongst the stuffed bears, stuffed Totoros, and sand paintings? ^_^

Yes. Yes, we do.

None can resist the lure of Pocky!

I'm curious to see how the Thunderbird has changed since the last time I was there. I understand they changed chain affiliations back in 2003 sort of like the Radisson South did this year. Always nice when the new owners remodel.

They appear to be doing a bang-up job of it. I haven't been in the T-Bird for, I dunno, four or five years, but it definitely has that "new hotel" look about it, sort of like a classic car from the 50s that's just come back from the car wash with a fresh coat of wax.

BTW if it makes you feel any better about your $300 for your car, I just had to shell out $750 just for some scheduled maintainence for my car Thursday. Ouch.

*cringe* That also reminds me that I need to quit treating the Sportage like a toaster and get the oil changed sometime in the next month or so.

Yeah, I didn't really want to spend the money but I figured I'd better get the timing belt replaced on schedule, and do the maintenence on the brakes, transmission, coolant, etc. I didn't do everything on the 60,000 mile check up but I did do all the big things.
