And another thing...

Synchronicity strikes again. I post this rant, and the next day the Wall Street Journal's OpinionJournal.com publishes an interview with Oriana Fallaci, who is on trial for railing against the transformation of her native Italy into a province of what she calls Eurabia. In the course of the interview, a couple of things jumped out at me:

"The moment you give up your principles, and your values...the moment you laugh at those principles, and those values, you are dead, your culture is dead, your civilization is dead. Period."

"The West reveals...a hatred of itself, which is strange and can only be considered pathological; the West...no longer loves itself; in its own history, it now sees only what is deplorable and destructive, while it is no longer able to perceive what is great and pure."

The first quote is from Fallaci herself; the second from the current Pope, back when we was merely (sic) Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. The essay from which she pulls that quote, "If Europe Hates Itself", is very much worth reading and speaks to the point I was trying to make.

Final note: if a rabid atheist and onetime Communist partisan (and I mean that in the gun-carrying guerrilla warfare sense as well as the political sense) and the Bishop of Rome agree that something's wrong, I think we'd all have to agree that something is indeed severely screwed up and needs to be fixed.
