A little bit of linkagery

Mitch Berg is on a roll this weekend. It's his third anniversary in the blogosphere, and a successful three years it's been, too. He has a great post up asking why it's okay for movie stars and pro athletes to talk smack (and worse) on national television but not okay for Marine generals., and a short piece on why us conservatives ought to be celebrating Reaganmas - Ronald Reagan's birthday.

It's all good. Check it out.

Firefight All Night Live!

One of the many well-deserved shots Howard Chaykin's American Flagg comic book series took at American media culture was a TV show featuring the heavily armed political clubs of Chicago blazing away at each other every night with network-supplied direct fire ordnance. I couldn't help thinking of that occasionally this weekend as I got involved in a couple of multi-player deathmatch games of HALO 2. Now, despite my military experience, I'm not all that good at HALO or any other first-person shooter. (For that matter, I was barely adequate as a rifleman; my best weapon was the grenade. Mr. Grenade was always my friend.) So basically what happened in these games was that on Friday night, stuckintraffik and the Reverend Jack spent most of their time hunting each other while I tried to find a good corner to hide in and occasionally do unto others before they could do the same to me. On Saturday, more of the same, except that Scott got all of the Reverend's attention, because, quite frankly, a mano a mano match between me and Josh is (for him) like beating up the Kid In The Helmet, a name I earned in our earliest matches when I was learning how to handle the controller and spent way too much time staring at my feet. This got me shot in the back of the head or carved up with the energy sword. A lot. To the point where it became boring for both of us.

Despite this, it's still fun being the third wheel in a game against two other players who are a lot better than I am. I'm getting better with the weapons, I'm getting better at moving around and shooting, and I hardly ever stare at my feet any more. It's all good.

Between auctions, dreams and meetings

I should be really grinding on the eBay, since this month is going to be financially snug to excess, but there's stuff I want to get down in the LJ before I forget it...like this dream from last night.

It was one of those dreams where your dream self is well aware that the stuff going on can't possibly be happening, but this awareness doesn't disrupt the flow of events in the least...anyhow, I was at a spa or corporate retreat center with the rest of my department from the Evil Banking Neighbor, and we were all in the swimming pool. Pool was chest-deep, deep enough to float or stand up in. We had all been handed the latest issue of the EBN's internal magazine, which featured a story on stress reduction seminars led by a Japanese photographer and his model, and the accompanying photo essay was nothing you would ever find in the corporate mag - nude photos of the photographer and his model that were erotic and strangely hieratic at the same time. So here we are, chest deep in this pool, and the seminar leader comes out and starts talking to us. His model comes over and proceeds to give me a massage, and I'm thinking, "This can't be happening. I'm floating in the water and she's exerting pressure on my muscles, so I should be sinking. But I'm not." The massage relaxed me to the point where I fell asleep. Weird.

Back in the real world, the Anime Detour meeting went fairly quickly. We've agreed to send out the progress report this coming week, and push back the pre-registration deadline to February 18. We have progress on all fronts, and the volunteer meeting is today at 1600, so things are rolling. I feel very good about the way things are going, so we're probably headed for a disaster of Biblical proportions, kayn eyn horeh!
