You know it's metal when...

...the track list includes such prizes as "Scar Spangled Banner", "War Is My Shepherd", "Shroud Of Urine", "Culling The Herd", "Sealed With A Fist" and "Impaler". Yeah. After this I think I'm going to pass on the next metal band I get all excited about...Testament's The Ritual was nothing special after "Electric Crown", and Exodus' Tempo of the Damned is proving to be just as big a disappointment...the only really good cut on this so far is "Blacklist", which has been getting fairly regular play on The Root of All Evil and could pass for a paticularly crunchin' AC/DC tune from the Bon Scott era if you weren't paying attention.

Yes, this evening I went forth to Earl Root's Root Cellar Records in search of fresh tunage, since you can only play U2 so often before you start getting sick of it, and got the Exodus CD along with the debut from Salubrious Invertebrae and Aesma Daeva's The New Athens Ethos, which is an interesting mix of classical forms and themes and thrash metal. Salubrious Invertebrae, on the other hand, is a throwback to the pre-digital electronica that was played in the 70s and early 80s by the Chris Franke-era Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze when he was recording albums such as Irrlicht and Cyborg for Brain Records. It's very cool stuff and well worth the $10 price. Order it online or stop by the store and say hello to local radio's best FM personality - probably the only thing I've agreed with the editors of City Pages on in years.

I should have been working on my apazine. I should have been doing my homework. Forget it. I'm going to bed.
