Comparing different flavors of Civicrack

I've been spending entirely too much time lately playing Civilization: Call to Power, trying to whip the game at the highest difficulty level and so far getting routinely beaten by the AI. I've played C2P II and been none too impressed - while some of the new units are cool, and playing on a real map of Earth is also cool, I still like the original C2P the best. The question I have (for chebutykin, mainly, but any other Civilization addicts in my friends list as well) is whether Civ III is an improvement on C2P II or a completely different animal? Is it worth buying?

Civ III is basically the same monster, but there are changes from Civ 2. I can't name them offhand.

Strangely, I've found Civ III much harder to get through than Civ 2, in that it takes far, FAR longer to get to the really good technologies...

I think that was intentional.

Civ III is basically the same game, with a cleaner interface and tweaks to the programming so the came plays a little more realistically (and is thus even harder to beat). The biggest addition is in the ways you can win -- you can now whup other societies in culture (for example), as well as the usual arms race or space tech win.

So far, I have had time for only one game. Which I sucked at. But it was fun.

Hmmm. Does the cleaner interface mean they got rid of the mayors from C2P II? ISTR a lot of people complaining about those...me, I always thought micromanaging your cities was part of the fun. ^^
