almost to the end of the tunnel

So yesterday I stopped by the Alexandria campus of NVCC on my way to the Arlington Center, where I was going to turn in my homework and take my advanced accounting final. The stop was for the express purpose of printing out the homework, which was a page & a half worth of analysis and comments on various CPA scenarios, and no sooner had I booted up my netbook to print the document in question than a librarian stopped by my table to inform me that the police had asked us to move away from the windows since the campus was on lockdown. It turned out there was a suicidal loony in the apartment towers west of the campus who was threatening to pop students off if he was approached, so I and a couple hundred other students wound up being trapped in the school until the city and county police resolved the situation about five hours later. We were so pissed. Half of my fellow students wanted the guy to just hurry up and off himself and get it over with; the other half were hoping the cops would deal with it, preferably sooner rather than later.

Which meant that I missed my final. Fortunately, since this was one of those rare force majeure situations, I was able to reschedule the final for 1000 this morning. Took advantage of the extra time to do a little extra studying, which may have been good for 4-8 points extra; in any case, I got a 79, which is much better than the wretched test scores I was getting when I started the class. I pretty much locked in a C, which is good enough for me. Tomorrow, it'll be the intermediate accounting II final.

Wednesday was much better. Started the morning with the Marketing final, which locked in the A for that class, then spent the rest of the day (and a good part of the evening) with P and Mr. F, formerly of e2, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. We got together with IWho at the Amphora in Herndon for lunch and then (sans IWho) went downtown for beers (them) and driving past various monuments and Federal buildings in the dark. We finished up with a stop at the Wall and its statue, which since Mr. F had spent a year in the Sandbox had a little more connection than it does for most folks. Many stories were told along the way, discussion of the recent stupidity at e2 that had caused P and Mr. F both to throw up their hands, quit their staff positions and (at least in P's case) pull down all her content. I haven't decided yet quite what I'm going to do about that, myself; the lack of domestic internets has left me less prone to hanging about e2 than I normally would be, and what with the end-of-semester crunch, I haven't had time to fart around on there anyway. What little writing I have done since Iron Noder ended has consisted of either schoolwork or a very brief update to Blood Red Skies. Hoping to be finished with that before I turn sixty...

...anyway, been sitting around the Alexandria campus for eight of the last 24 hours, and only gotten about four hours of sleep in that. Think I'll go home, eat some lunch, and nap before studying some more.

Since I'm still on NVCC's alert-text system, I was getting the warnings. Quite frankly, I'd have just gone out to my car and gone home. Lockdowns for anything short of an active shooter on campus, are more security theater.

Maybe I should have, but it's too late now.

I'm a cynical bastard, with no faith in the "authorities".
